Perdido Key’s premier art gallery, Artworks Studio & Gallery, celebrated 12 years of making the community beautiful on Saturday, July 6th. Located at 13700 Perdido Key Drive in the Villagio Shopping Complex, Artworks features some of the best local and regional artists and hold some of the best and most affordable art classes in the area for everyone to try.
Owner Talis Jayme believes that art is an expression of internal feelings. Feelings for the places we love, the people we love, and the human emotions, both happy and sad, that make us who we are. Her collections of watercolors, acrylics, pastels, and limited edition notecards that feature some of the treasures found in our own backyard have made Talis one of the most recognized and beloved artist along the Gulf Coast.
Having owned galleries for 20 years, her Artworks Studio & Gallery opened in 2007 shortly after losing her first gallery, Talis By the Sea (where she originally partnered with Susan McCullough and Susan Gardner), in Hurricane Ivan.
“What started as an impromptu artist’ co-op has grown into a significant source for local artwork including, paintings, jewelry, pottery, glasswork, and more. Currently the gallery includes sixteen local artist. Artworks is known for its’ unique, funky, coastal, and special art and gifts,” Talis said.
Artworks Gallery features about 16 different artists from the area and prides itself on providing a safe haven for artist and crafters, both beginner and professional. Talis and the other talented artist’s work welcomes you as you walk through the doors of this delightful gallery, and her collection of angels and coastal artwork will leave you breathless.
“There is always a class of children, snowbirds, or customers sipping wine with paint brushes in hand depending on the time of day your happen to visit. Each year at the Frank Brown International Songwriters Festival, Artworks hosts an intimate night of the latest and greatest songwriters and performers from Nashville, nearby and the world. On a regular basis, there are “functions” that include Artist of the Month, book signing, annual Hungry Hearts to raise food for the local school children (Artworks is a drop site for unopened non-perishable food for 325 Zero Hungry year round) and much more,” Talis said.
The 12th Anniversary party was attended by many others business owners in the community such as Chris and Tracy Mull of the Purple Parrot, Real Estate Broker Susan Ridgeway, Mullet Wrapper owner Fran Thompson, and fellow Gallery Owner Judith Sasser, just to name a few. Many of the gallery’s featured artists such as Noah Moseley, Kevin Clark, and Tony Krysinsky were on hand to celebrate as well.
“So many people say that they can’t paint a thing and claim they aren’t artistic, but to that I say, maybe you’ve decorated a beautiful home. Maybe you’ve created beautiful meals for your family. Maybe you’ve stylishly clothed your children. All of these things are forms of art and people don’t realize that. It’s all about tapping into those areas of beauty and creativity. Our goal here at Artworks is just help them find it,” said Talis.
With a mantra that says “art is from the heart”, all of those involved with Artworks Studio & Gallery have been pivotal to its success over the last 12 years. And with no end in sight, it’s clear to see that this little gallery tucked away in the gem we call Perdido Key has a heart that will continue you beating for years to come.
